When does my child start school?

In Malaysia, children enter Standard 1 in the year they turn 7 — the long-standing, mandatory entry age. From your child's birth date, this maps out their entire primary and secondary schooling.

How it's calculated

Standard 1 begins in the calendar year your child turns 7. From there we lay out Standard 1–6 (primary) and Form 1–5 (secondary), with the year and age for each.

From 2027, an optional early entry to Year One at age 6 becomes available under the new education blueprint, but age-7 entry remains the standard route most families take.

Frequently asked questions

What age do children start school in Malaysia?

Standard 1 starts at age 7, based on the child's age at the start of the school year. Entry at 7 is mandatory and the most common path.

Can my child start school at 6?

From 2027 an optional age-6 entry to Year One is being introduced, subject to the child's readiness and the parents' choice. It is not compulsory.
