What is EPF?
EPF (Employees Provident Fund), known locally as KWSP, is Malaysia's mandatory retirement savings scheme. Both you and your employer contribute every month.
Your savings earn an annual dividend and can be withdrawn for retirement, housing, healthcare and education under specific schemes.
EPF contribution rates
Employees under 60 contribute 11% of monthly wages. Employers contribute 13% when your monthly wage is RM5,000 or below, and 12% above RM5,000.
Contributions follow the EPF Third Schedule, which rounds to the nearest ringgit within wage bands.
Why employer EPF matters
The employer share is effectively extra retirement savings on top of your salary. On a RM5,000 salary, that's RM650 a month your employer adds to your EPF.
Over a career, employer contributions plus dividends make up a large part of your retirement nest egg.
Frequently asked questions
How much EPF is deducted from my salary?+
Employees under 60 contribute 11% of their monthly wage. On RM4,000 that's RM440 deducted from your pay.
How much does my employer contribute to EPF?+
13% if your monthly salary is RM5,000 or below, otherwise 12%. This is paid on top of your salary into your EPF account.
Can I contribute more than 11% to EPF?+
Yes. You can voluntarily increase your contribution rate or top up via schemes like i-Saraan, but this calculator uses the statutory 11% rate.
