Understanding the numbers

How the figures above are worked out — the rules, rates and reasoning behind every line.

Estimates only. Results are for planning purposes and may differ from official figures. Confirm against the relevant authority before making financial decisions.

Negotiate in take-home terms

You feel a raise in your take-home pay, but you negotiate in gross salary. Every extra ringgit of gross loses 11% to EPF, a little to SOCSO, EIS and SKBBK, and tax at your marginal rate.

Enter your current salary and the extra take-home you want. The calculator works backwards through YA 2026 rates to the gross figure to ask for.

Preparing your number

Check pay for your role in job ads and published salary guides, and note your achievements with figures.

Remember your employer's cost is higher than your gross, because it also pays EPF, SOCSO and EIS.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a bigger raise than the take-home I want?

Deductions take a share of every ringgit you add. Once you are in the 19% tax bracket, keeping RM1 more needs well over RM1.30 of gross.

Does this include my employer's EPF?

No. Employer EPF goes into your EPF account and isn't part of take-home pay, so it isn't counted here.
