Use the dealer’s buy-back price, not its selling price. The gap between the two is the real cost of buying physical gold.

Example scenarios

  • 20 g bought at RM380/g, buy-back now RM450/g, held 2 years

    About 8.8% a year.

    Gain RM1,400 (18.4%)

Understanding the numbers

How the figures above are worked out — the rules, rates and reasoning behind every line.

Estimates only. Results are for planning purposes and may differ from official figures. Confirm against the relevant authority before making financial decisions.

Value gold at the price you can sell for

Dealers and banks quote two prices: the price they sell to you and the lower price they buy back at. What you can actually get is the buy-back price, so use that as today's price.

The gap between the two prices is the main cost of holding physical gold, so a short holding period can show a loss even if the gold price rose.

Ways to hold gold

Physical bars and coins: you own the metal; storage and the buy-sell spread are your costs.

Jewellery: includes workmanship charges you don't get back when selling.

Bank gold accounts and gold ETFs: no storage, usually a narrower spread.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gain on gold taxed?

For individual investors, Malaysia has no capital gains tax, so gains on gold held as an investment are generally not taxed.

What does the yearly return mean?

It is the compound annual growth rate: the steady yearly return that would turn what you paid into today's value over the years held.
