How fixed deposits work

A fixed deposit (FD) locks a lump sum with a bank for a set tenure at a fixed rate. You get your principal plus interest at maturity.

FD interest is typically simple interest for the tenure, paid at maturity. Rates are higher for longer tenures and larger placements.

How the maturity value is calculated

Interest = placement amount × annual rate × tenure (in years). Your maturity value is the placement amount plus that interest.

Breaking an FD early usually means you lose some or all of the interest, so only commit money you can leave untouched.

Safety of fixed deposits

FDs at member banks are protected by PIDM up to RM250,000 per depositor per bank, making them one of the lowest-risk places to park cash.

Frequently asked questions

How is fixed deposit interest calculated in Malaysia?

FD interest is usually simple interest: placement amount × annual rate × tenure in years, paid at maturity. Rates vary by bank, tenure and placement size. A RM10,000 FD at 3.5% for 1 year earns RM350.

Are fixed deposits safe?

Yes. Deposits at PIDM member banks are protected up to RM250,000 per depositor per bank, so FDs carry very low risk.

What happens if I withdraw my FD early?

Early withdrawal usually forfeits some or all of the interest for that placement, though you keep your principal. Terms vary by bank.
