EV Road Tax Calculator Malaysia

Work out your electric vehicle's annual road tax under Malaysia's 2026 kW-based structure — the same rate nationwide, from your motor's power output.

Rates basis: Indicative

Your EV

Total electric motor output in kilowatts (kW). For AWD EVs with two motors, add both together. Find it on your vehicle Geran under 'Keupayaan Enjin' — do not use the battery's kWh figure.

2026 kW-based structure — the same rate nationwide, for private and company registration alike. Use your motor's kW (from the Geran, "Keupayaan Enjin"), not the battery's kWh. Dual-motor / AWD EVs use combined output.

Example scenarios

  • BYD Atto 3 (150 kW)

A mainstream single-motor EV sits in the second power band.

    RM160 / year

  • Tesla Model Y RWD (220 kW)

Still a fraction of what a comparable petrol car pays.

    RM305 / year

  • Model Y Performance (393 kW)

Dual-motor AWD road tax uses the two motors' combined output.

    RM1,015 / year

Understanding the numbers

EV road tax from 2026

Electric vehicles paid no road tax from 2022 to the end of 2025. From 1 January 2026 a new structure applies to battery EVs (BEV) and fuel-cell EVs (FCEV), based on motor power output in kilowatts (kW) rather than engine capacity.

Unlike petrol and diesel cars, the EV rate is the same right across Malaysia — there is no cheaper Sabah/Sarawak band — and it is identical for private and company-registered vehicles. Rates are still far lower than an equivalent petrol car, in many cases 85% less.

How it's calculated

EVs are grouped into power bands. Within a band you pay a base rate plus a fixed amount for every 10 kW (a '9,999 watt block') above the band's threshold, so the tax rises smoothly as output increases. Output above roughly 1,010 kW is a flat RM20,000.

Use your motor's kW figure from the vehicle Geran (Vehicle Ownership Certificate) under 'Keupayaan Enjin'. Do not use the battery's kWh capacity — that is a different measurement. For all-wheel-drive EVs with two motors, add both motors' output together.

PHEVs are different

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are not covered by this structure. Because they still have a combustion engine, they are taxed on engine capacity (cc) exactly like a petrol car — use the standard road tax calculator for those.

Frequently asked questions

How is EV road tax calculated in Malaysia from 2026?

It is based on the electric motor's power output in kilowatts (kW). You pay a base rate for your power band plus a small increment for every 10 kW above the band's threshold. It is not based on battery kWh or engine cc.

Is EV road tax cheaper in Sabah and Sarawak?

No. Unlike petrol and diesel cars, the EV road tax is uniform nationwide — the same rate everywhere in Malaysia, and the same for private and company registration.

Where do I find my EV's kW figure?

It is printed on your vehicle Geran (Vehicle Ownership Certificate) under 'Keupayaan Enjin', shown in kW. For dual-motor / AWD EVs, add the two motors' outputs together.

Do plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) use this EV road tax?

No. PHEVs are taxed on engine capacity (cc) like a normal petrol car, because they still have a combustion engine. Only pure battery EVs and fuel-cell EVs use the kW structure.
